Did You Know?
Located 35 kilometres east of Brandon, Canadian Forces Base Shilo has been the site of military activity in the region since 1910. Camp Sewell, later re-named Camp Hughes, was located approximately 10 kms north of present day Shilo. Permanent construction on what is known today as CFB Shilo started in 1932. The training area of current CFB Shilo covers an area 15 kms by 30 kms.
About 1400 military and 440 civilian personnel currently work at CFB Shilo. During peak training periods as many as 500 additional military personnel will also live and train at the base.
With a resident population of about 1700 people the base has its own residential area, operates its own sewer and water system and provides fire and emergency services to base residents as well as neighbouring communities.
Deployments:
- There are currently very few people from CFB Shilo deployed on overseas operations. Units are training and preparing for upcoming deployments in 2013.
- Every winter soldiers from 1RCHA, based at CFB Shilo, deploy to Rogers Pass B.C. to assist with avalanche control. Known as OP PALACI the gunners help Parks Canada keep the Trans Canada highway and nearby railway safer from the dangers of avalanches.
